Benny and Maria Wenda

Benny and Maria Wenda are from West Papua and based in Oxford.

Benny Wenda is the Nobel Peace Prize nominated West Papuan independence leader fighting to free his people from Indonesian colonial rule. Since his dramatic escape from an Indonesian prison in 2002, where he was held in isolation and tortured as a political prisoner, Benny has been an unceasing crusader on the international scene, campaigning to bring about an end to the suffering of indigenous Papuans at the hands of the colonial regime.

His wife Maria Wenda writes songs of their journey and struggle. Together, the Lani Singers perform this music all over the world to raise awareness of the West Papuan plea for freedom
